Joseph Furphy, the writer, was born at Yering, near Yarra Glen. He is best known for Such is life (1903) published under the pen-name 'Tom Collins'. Born in Ireland, Baker came to Australia as a child. While she was a school teacher in Victoria, she became acquainted with Joseph Furphy, and encouraged him to write.
